Human Resources Certification

Ready to Take the PHR/SPHR Exam: Get Prepared with HRACO!

HRACO offers two certification PHR/SPHR preparation courses each year, one in the spring (March/April) and another in the fall (October/November) prior to the exam windows of May 1 – June 30 and December 1 – January 31.  The course content follows the SHRM Learning System.  The Learning System is six modules specifically designed to match the content on the exams.

  • Strategic Management
  • Workforce Planning and Employment
  • Human Resource Development
  • Total Rewards (Compensation & Benefits)
  • Employee and Labor Relations
  • Risk Management (Health, Safety, Security)

Participants can elect to order the Learning System at a discounted rate as part of the course registration fee.  The SHRM Learning system also includes online access to additional study tools, like practice questions, interactive case studies, and flash cards.  Facilitators walk participants through the material, providing test taking tips, and practitioner insight.  The course materials include a binder with facilitator slides and practice exam questions.  The SHRM Learning System and course material are great resources even after passing the exam.

The courses are generally eight consecutive Wednesdays from 6-10PM.  Details about the next HRACO certification course, including pricing, location, and dates, are posted on the HRACO Events Calendar in the month corresponding with start of the course.  Course information is generally posted on the Events Calendar two months prior to the start of the course and registration is open at that time.

What is certification?

Certification is a voluntary action by a professional group to establish a system to grant recognition to professionals who have met a stated level of training and work experience. Certified individuals are usually issued a certificate attesting that they have met the standards of the credentialing organization and are entitled to make the public aware of their credentialed status, usually through the use of initials (i.e., PHR or SPHR) after their names.

Certifications differ from certificate programs because certifications include an experience component. Certificate programs, on the other hand, award certificates once a course of study has been completed and do not require previous work experience.

Get HR Certified: Set Yourself Apart

HR certification is a career-long commitment that demonstrates to your peers, your employees and your organization that you have mastered the core HR knowledge and principles and that you are dedicated to staying current in your field.  Earning your HR certification:

  • Makes your resume stand out from other job applicants.
    • One out of two hiring managers prefers those with HR certification.
  • Earns recognition from your organization.
    • Business leaders find that HR certification distinguishes individuals who are more self-motivated.

Passing the exam is only one part of the certification process. Because the exams are experience based, applicants must have the required work experience to be eligible to apply for the exams. Once the certified HR professional has passed the exam, the recertification requirements ensure that the HR professional is keeping abreast of changes in the field.

HR certification is administered by the HR Certification Institute (HRCI). HRCI is affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM); however HRCI is an independent, internationally recognized certifying body for the HR profession.

Start the HR Certification Process

The first step to HR Certification is to understand the certification process.  The HRCI website has everything you need to know about certification, www.hrci.org.  There are a number of certifications available, including the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certifications.  You must be eligible to apply.  The HRCI Certification Handbook outlines exam options, eligibility, exam application, and exam scheduling.  Certified professionals must maintain the designation by recertifying every three years.  Recertification is also administered by HRCI.

(HRACO Fee and Refund Policy: The HRACO certification course does not include the exam application fee.  Eligibility for the exam is determined by HRCI.  HRACO course participants take responsibility for determining exam eligibility prior to registration for the HRACO course.  Participants may withdraw from the course up to 15 working days before the start of the class and receive a full refund minus SHRM Learning System costs. After that date, there will be a $50.00 processing fee. No refunds will be given after class begins.)
